Reflections from the 44th Annual ATRIP Congress 2026 in Brazil

The 44th Annual ATRIP Congress was held at the University of São Paulo from 28 June to 1 July 2026 under the theme “Intellectual Property and Politics: From Power Relations to Realpolitik.” The Congress brought together more than 170 speakers and around 250 participants from across the globe to explore how political dynamics shape contemporary IP law.

The Scientific Program examined these issues from geopolitical, economic, democratic, and technological perspectives, emphasizing the role of power, institutions, and ideology in shaping IP systems. Sessions addressed global governance, international relations, generative AI, health, pharmaceuticals, data governance, and sector-specific developments, highlighting the interplay between innovation, access, and justice.

The Congress also featured a vibrant social program showcasing Brazilian culture, fostering a welcoming atmosphere for the ATRIP community.

It also marked the conclusion of Prof. Orit Fischman-Afori’s term as ATRIP President and the handover to the new President, Prof. Estelle Derclaye.

ATRIP warmly thanks the Brazilian hosts – Prof. Juliana Krueger Pela, Prof. Milton Lucídio Leão Barcellos, and Dr. Pedro Henrique D. Batista – for their outstanding organization, as well as the Congress sponsors: ABPI, Fundação Arcadas, Kasznar Leonardos, Leão Intellectual Property, WIPO, and FICPI.
